The Port of Lowestoft has its roots buried in history, along with the rest of the town, which was developed around the port.
The early Victorian port was constructed when Lake Lothing was connected to the North Sea and The Broads via two cuts. This, along with the Norwich to Lowestoft railway, allowed the port to boom.
Surviving catastrophic accidents, fires, two world wars, storms and crime, the port still holds a considerable connection to its history.
One of the most notable, Black Saturday, in October 1882, where numerous ships were lost due to a ferocious and merciless storm. Some say you can still hear the bells ringing out as the ships went down…
